New York: The Macmillan Company, 1919. The American historian Henry (Brooks) Adams (1838-1918), a presidential decendant, became a prominent "public intellectual." He was influenced by John Stuart Mill. The first trade edition of his autobiography, "The Education of Henry Adams" became a posthumous hit and has made it on to the Modern Library's 100 Best Nonfiction Books (as #1). This posthumous collection of essays has an introduction by his brother Brooks Adams. A Very Good copy of the First Edition, published one year after Henry's death. Dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; xv, 317 pages, indexed. The top is dusty, the front hinge is cracked but holding well. There is mottling on the rear cover, else it would have a better condition rating. The scarce dustjacket is present. Published anonymously; per WorlCat, the author is identified asGeorge Douglas Tallman, who wrote at least two other humorous books. He seems to have vanished from the pages of literary history, as Twain has not. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition; held by twelve libraries worldwide but unusual in the trade. Brown pebbled cloth binding with decorative stamping on the covers; gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 252 pages. Mild foxing at the endpapers.
