1 The Life and Adventures of Kit Carson, The Nestor of the Rocky Mountains. From Facts Narrated By Himself
New York W.R.C. Clark & Meeker 1859 Later Printing. Hardcover Very Good Minus No Jacket Arthur Lumley
New York: W.R.C. Clark & Meeker, 1859. The first "respectable" biography of Christopher Carson (1809-1868), fur trapper, scout, and guide for John C. Fremont. Carson was famous early in his life, mostly through the dime novel; yet to come was service in the Civil War and his unfortunate war on the Navajo. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of a Later Printing, with a partner publisher added to the Title Page. The First Edition was published a year earlier by Clark alone. VERY SCARCE (no copies held, per WorldCat). Olive decorative cloth binding, blindstamped with an image of the scout and his horse on both covers; the front is filled with gilt. Kit is also represented on the spine, standing with what appears to be a Hawken rifle decorated with brass tacks. 534 pages, with 6 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. The last page has the signature of a previous owner, dated 1859. The text is generally bright, with minimal foxing; some old floodmarks. All margins are rubbed, and the corners are rubbed to a fray. The illustrations are by the Dublin-born Arthur Lumley (1837-1912), who would become an acclaimed artist during the Civil War. The cover of the spine has split and separated, showing its newsprint backing, for about half the way down. Please note the condition issue. Although a sound copy, some minor restoration work is needed to reglue the spine. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Later Printing.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. Illus. by Arthur Lumley.
