New York: Viking, 1935. One of the great anti-war novels of the Twentieth Century, and the basis for an outstanding film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Although Humphrey Cobb (1899-1944) was an American, he enlisted with the Canadian forces in 1916. He based his novel on a true-life story of soldiers executed as "examples," and seasoned it with his own experience in World War One. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Blue, red, and gilt cloth binding. Clean text; 265 pages. Bit of fade to the covers at the margins; red topstain is also faded.
