Capek, Karel & Joseph Capek Krakonosova Zahrada ("Krakonosova Garden") Prague (Praha) Aventinum 1929 First Thus Hardcover Near Fine No Jacket Signed Prague (Praha): Aventinum, 1929. A scarce volume by Karel Capek (1890-1938) and his brother Josef (1887-1945). Karel is considered to be the finest modern Czech writer, most famous for his speculative fiction, such as "War with the Newts" and "R.U.R." which coined the term "robot". Karel gave credit to Josef for inventing the term. Both were members of the European avant-garde, both artists, although one is more known for his writing, and the other more for his art. Josef perished in the Bergen-Belson concentration camp. Karel evaded this fate by passing through natural causes before the Nazis could seize him. This is a Near Fine copy of "The Writings of the Brothers Capek," the First Edition Thus. This volume in the series containins "Krakonosova Garden," which dates from 1918. Gray cloth binding with lettering in black and red. Clean text; 137 pages. This copy has been SIGNED on a front endpaper by BOTH Carl and Joseph Capek. (Quercus, certainly not an expert on Eastern European languages, is uncertain, but suggests the possibility that "III. VYDANI" on the Title Page refers to this as the "Third Volume"; translation softwear comes up with "III Release," so possibly the Third Edition.) Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Signed by Author. First Thus. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. First Edition.
