27 Langford, Nathaniel Pitt Diary of the Washburn Expedition to the Yellowstone and Firehole Rivers in the Year 1870
St. Paul Privately Printed 1905 First Edition. Hardcover Near Fine No Jacket
St. Paul: Privately Printed, 1905. N.P. Langford (1832-1911), along with Henry Dana Washburn (1832-1871) and Lt. Gustavus C. Doane (1840-1892) explored what would become Yellowstone National Park. Langford would become the Park's first Superintendant, although without a budget or even a salary, he accomplished little and was eleieved of his duties through political pressure. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition of his journal, an important primary source in the history of the American West. Navy blue decorative cloth binding. Bright gilt lettering and an illustration of two explorers and their pack animal, filled with orange; the edges are bevelled. Langford published the book himself near the end of his life; there is no place of publication, but Langford's Introduction places him in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a Trade edition from the same year was published there. Uncommon; WorldCat reports only electronic copies and LOC only has the reprint from 1923. Clean text; 36 pages of introduction and 122 pages of text on a glossy paper stock. 28 Ludlow, Fitz Hugh The Heart of the Continent: A Record of Travel Across the Plains and in Oregon, with an Examination of the Mormon Principle
New York Hurd and Houghton 1871 Later Printing Hardcover Very Good (Minus) No Jacket
New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1871. Ludlow (1836-1870) was a prolific journalist; his most famous work is "The Hashesh Eater" (1857) describing his addiction to opium. Ironically, he has become an icon of the current American drug culture. This is his account of a trip across the American West with the artist Alfred Bierstadt in 1859. Of interest is a long Appendix detailing the life of the Mormons in Utah. Originally published in 1870; this is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the second issue, from a year later. An uncommon title. Green cloth binding, stamped in black on the front cover, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; vi, 568 pages; illustrated. While basically a sound copy, it is rather rough-looking, with rubbing to the margins. The pages are stiff to turn, suggesting presence in a damp location at some time; there are flood marks on the first 15 pages or so. At some time, what looks to be a contemporary newspaper clipping was laid-in; residues of this are present. There is a previous-owner signature on the second free endpaper. While this is a solid copy (far from a Binding Copy) Quercus feels it would be a good candidate for rebinding, to give this important source a renewed life.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
