From its first publication in 1789 to the dawn of the 20th Century, White's "Natural History" went through at least 90 editions in the British Isles alone, and it continues to delight. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus, presented in an attractive fine binding. Marbled paper-covered boards and endpapers with tips and spine in dark green leather; five raised bands. Identified as "The Standard Edition by E.T. Bennett. Thoroughly revised, with additional Notes, by James Edmund Harting, F.L.S., F.Z.S." Illustrated by Thomas Bewick and others.Rubbed at the margins. A solid copy, quite readable today. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First Thus.. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Brown). First Edition.

London: A. Donaldson, 1832. White's great natural history is still in print. Here is an early 19th-century edition in a full-leather binding. Smooth calf with gilt ruling on the front and rear covers; five raised bands on the spine, highlighted in gilt and with a red and gilt label. Clean text; 562 pages, with Index and Index to the Antiquities; marbled endpapers, all page edges also marbled. There is no publication date; however, the Preface, by "J.R.," is dated 1832. Interestingly, there are thirteen different publishers listed on the Title Page.The textblock is close to Fine, very bright and supple. However, this is a Good only copy: both gutters have cracked and are very tender; and the spine leather has separated and is barely holding on; about 1/3 (lower) is demolished and is not present. Please note the condition issues; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of restoration or repair. Because of the internally quality, Quercus considers this book an excellent candidate for a rebind. . First Thus. Full-Leather. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First Edition.

Decorative green cloth binding in shades of green, with black and gilt. The front cover features a hawk, on the spine an elk. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition Thus, part of Routledges's "Standard Works Uniform with this Volume." Clean text; xxvi, 475 pages. Index, Introduction, and the Original "Advertisement." Just hints of rubbing at the margins, and a slight fading to the spine. Else a Fine copy, and quite readable today Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First Thus.. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. First Edition.
