New York: Harper & Brothers, 1887. Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888), Scottish author and Christian mystic, traveled to Palestine in 1879, with the intention to facilitate Jewish immigration; he is one of those Christian Zionists who were instrumental in the eventual founding of the Jewish state. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition; edited by Charles A. Dana, from letters sent to him by Oliphant and published in his newspaper. Not common. Brown cloth binding with beveled edges and gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 369 pages, with six pages of publisher's adverts in the rear ("Valuable Works of Exploration and Adventure in the East"). Corners are bumped, and with light wear, mainly at the head and foot of the spine. This is a solid copy of an important historical source, quite readable today. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. TP & footer of DJ), this is the popular reprint edition which was printed from the original plates. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy. Orange cloth binding with blue lettering and spine decoration (head of Lawrence). Small waterstain on top edge.The striking DJ (by William Streib) with orange, black, and purple inks, is Very Good with some light soil and edgewear (minor chips); spine has faded. London: Hutchinson With this book the American journalist Lowell Thomas (1892-1981) established "Lawrence of Arabia" in popular culture; Lawrence himself loathed the book and the reputation.This is a Very Good (minus) copy of the First English Edition (105th Thousand). No publication date, as was Hutchinson's practice, but agreed by bibliographers to be 1924. Gray cloth boards, ruled with black, darkened on the spine. This is an ex-libris copy, with a number on the spine; however, there are no other treatments to be seen. Wear to the margins, particularly to the edges of the spine. Lacking the dustwrapper. Fancy gilt spine with a red label, rubbed at the margins This is an attractive volume, and an important ethnological resource. However, the spine cover has separated; although present, it will require reglueing before the volume can be called sound.
