85 Wison, Huntington Save America ("Stultitia"). An Appeal to Patriotism
New York Frederick A. Stokes Company 1915 First Thus. Hardcover Near Fine No Jacket Signed
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1915. Huntington Wilson (1875-1946) was an American diplomat who rose to be an Assistant Secretary of State; he had experience in Japan, South America, and the Ottoman Empire. Here he presents a series of four satirical "discussions" that might suffice as acts in a play - complete with stock characters. An interesting, and well-done, view of the issues leading up to the First World War. Originally published anonymously ("By a Former American Government Official") and with a different subtitle ("A Nightmare and an Awakening") in 1914. This copy is identical and includes all copyright information and the Stokes stamp of "February, 1915." However, the title has been changed and the author is identified. Quercus therefore speculates that this is either a corrected Second Issue, or the First Edition Thus (you choose). This is a Near Fine copy; bright red cloth binding, ruled in black, with paper labels on the front cover and spine. Clean text; 180 pages. This copy has been SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author (dated 1916) on the FFEP "with the kind regards of his kinsman." A bit of further research might identify this relative. Hints of bumping, and a touch of wear at the head and foot of the spine; else a Fine copy. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. First Thus.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. First Edition.
