New York & London: Horace Liveright/Jonathan Cape, 1931. "This great travel book is the greatest surely in the English language. 'Arabia Deserta' is not a book: it is a continent." and ".the greatest epic in all the literature of travel" (St. John Philby). Originally published in 1888, it was rediscovered and popularized by T.E. Lawrence. Doughty (1843-1926) crafted his work in a more leisurely time, hence it also was exceedingly long; these selections by the famous critic and editor Edward Garnett (1868-1937) will certainly suffice for ours. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, which is rather scarce. Glossy black cloth binding with bright gilt lettering. Bright and fresh text, 320 pages (includes a Glossary). The two upper corners are very mildly bumped, else Fine. The dustwrapper is complete but does have several chips at the creases and at the very top of the spine, which is somewhat tanned; there is a split along one edge of the spine. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Dust jacket present. First Edition.
