Chicago: Laird & Lee, 1889. " A Complete and Accurate History of the Assassination of Dr. Patrick Henry Cronin, the Searcxh for the Murderers, the Inquest, the Trial, and the Verdict." Illustrated with many engravings. Cronin, an Irish patriot, was murdered for political reasons in what was known as "the crime of the century" (actual title of a competing volume of popular history by a rival publisher). This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding, now darkened, with a blindstamped portrait of Dr. Cronin and the motto "Or the Irish Patriot's Fate. A Complete History of the Greatest of Modern Crimes." The volume shows some wear, with moderate soiling and bumped corners. 527 pages; the text is generally quite clean and supple. Three tiny and mysterious stampings, perhaps refering to a private library. There is a split starting at the rear gutter. No dustjacket. The late-19th Century interest in this mystery was comparable to the Lindbergh kidnapping or OJ Simpson; a fascinating nook of American Irish history, and surprisingly scarce. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. First Edition.
