Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1886. Helen Hust Jackson (1830-1885) was an effective activist for America's indigenous native people; most famous today for "Ramona,"probably her most enduring work. This book of essays might be clasified as a travel book, but the first section, on California and Oregon, contains perhaps the most important essay in the book: "The Present Conditions of the Mission Indians in Southern California," a subject dear to Jackson's heart. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition.Golden tan cloth binding with gilt lettering on the cover and spine. Clean text; 418 pages, with two pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Mildly bumped, with a slight lean, and some faint staining. A solid copy. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. First Edition.
