New York: E.B. Treat & Co. (and Others), 1866. Joel T. Headley (1813-1897), clergyman and newspaperman (he edited Horace Greeley's New York "Tribune"), wrote several histories. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. It was "Published Only by Subscription," so six other publishers are also listed on the Title Page. Brown pebbled cloth binding, blindstamped with a decorative bit of ruling on the covers; lettered in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 608 pages, with Appendix; four pages of adverts in the front describing Headley's other works. Illustrated with "numerous Fine Steel Portraits, Scenes, & Maps;" frontis is Grant. There is light wear to the covers and the lettering on the spine is a bit faded, but the text is exceptional in this copy: bright and supple, a pleasure to read; a solid copy. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. First Edition.
