London: Henry G. Bohn, 1852. Published anonymously, this series of sketches are the work of William Clarke (1800-1838), and was originally published in 1830. It was reprinted many times; despite its popularity, it is rather uncommon. Quercus believes this might be the first printing of "Bohn's Illustrated Library," with fifty illustrations by the famed George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Clean text; 432 pages, There are 7 pages of publisher adverts found in both the front and the rear, starting at the paste-downs, a rather unusual publisher practice. Decoratively stamped cloth binding; bumped, with rubbing at head and foot of spine. Very little of the original green colour remains; it has turned to brown on the spine, where the gilt lettering remains very bright. several lighter areas from spots on both front and back. The front gutter has split and has detached itself. Please note the condition issue. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repairs or restoration.. First Thus.. Decorative Cloth.
