London & Belfast: Simms and McIntyre, 1848. The Irish writer William Carleton (1794-1869) was one of the most popular authors of the 19th Century, and his works were published many times by various publishers (the exact publication sequence is problematic). This is a Very Good (minus) copy of the First Edition Thus, with an introduction "written for this edition." Uncommon to scarce. Marbled paper-covered boards with leather spine and tips. The spine has ruling and gilt lettering "Irish Tales by Carleton," indicating this volume was probably part of a set. Uncommon to rare. Clean text; 288 pages, rather evenly tanned. There are two previous-owner signatures on the Title Page: one, very clear, is in ink; the other, in pencil, Quercus has been unable to read. The corners are bumped and the covers are rubbed. The spine is crackled, but remains a nice presentation due to the clarity of the gilt lettering; the front gutter is cracked, but is holding. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First Thus.. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. First Edition.
