New York: Scott-Thaw Company, 1903. Originally published in 1538, Holbein's sublime woodcut illustrations have been reprinted many times over the centuries since. This is an extremely attractive small volume LIMITED to 750 copies (although this copy is not numbered). Quercus believes it to be a reprint of the edition published in London by G. Bell in 1892 (although this is not seen), since Henry Austin Dobson (1840-1924) had also provided the very thorough notes to that edition. A Near Fine copy, and an uncommon to scarce title. Gray paper-covered boards with a parchment spine with a paper label. There are 43 pages of text, followed by XLIX woodcut reproductions. "Accompanying each cut cut is a related passage of Scripture in Latin, with a quatrain giving its equivalent rendering in French, probably by Gilles Corrozet" (Open Library). The reproductions are of extremely high quality; despite the small format, detail is completely clear. Dobson has included one of his own poems - a "chant royal, after Holbein." There is a tiny bookseller's label on the rear paste-down. Mild bumps and very slightly cocked, else a Fine copy. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Limited.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Illus. by Hans Holbein.
