London, Paris & New York: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., 1880. Louis Figuier (1819-1894) abandoned research to write popular science books such as this; in his very interesting Preface, the engineer/editor Robert Wilson complains that his science was not very good! Nonetheless, this is an interesting book, and uncommon. No publication date; Quercus assumes it to be circa 1880. Brown decorative cloth binding; stamped and filled in black on the front cover; black and gilt on the spine. Clean text; x, 621 pages, indexed. With 242 great black-and-white illustrations. Bookplate of the illustrator J.Carl Pehl (1872-1959) on the front paste-down. Rubbed at the margins, but remains sound and quite attractive. . First Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First Edition.
