London: Jonn Murray, 1890. Darwin's first published book; of equal importance as the "Origin of Species." This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the "New Edition." Green cloth binding with a gilt illustration of the Rhea hunt on the front cover; gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; xi, 500 pages, indexed. Frontis portrait of Darwin. No later publisher's catalog. Previous-owner signature and stamp on the FFEP; some light flood-marking on the first few pages (mainly the endpapers). Bumped corners, rubbing at the margins. The gutters have cracked but seem to be holding nicely. There is some rather oppressive mottling affecting the spine and front cover, looking almost like the result of a chemical spill. Please note the condition issue. While this is a basically sound copy, Quercus must offer it as a Binding Copy, in need of repair or restoration. We find this an excellent candidate for a nice rebind.. First Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.
