New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1880. Set in the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this is the only historical novel written by Hardy (1840-1928); for an author noted for his realism, this is an odd duck indeed in his canon. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, which is uncommon. This is Number 118 of "The Leisure Hour Series," published in the same year as the English first. The publisher indicates that six other titles by Hardy had been published in this series. An uncommon book, Mustard-yellow decorative cloth binding, with designs of a spider web on the front cover, flower and rules on the rear; spine is titled in black and gilt, along with the owl logo of the publisher. Clean text; 366 pages. Designated as the "Author's Edition," indicating American copyright protection. The endpapers have catalog listings from the publisher printed in red. Included is a page of printed slips that libraries could remove and paste into card catalogs. Previous-owned signature (1882) on the second free endpaper. There is some light rubbing to the foot and crown of the spine, which is slightly darkened. There is a bit of a lean. Other than that, an extremely attractive copy.. First American Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First Edition.
