Frontis is of Brian Boru; also reproduces the original Title Page of an earlier edition prior to the current Title Page. Very minor scuffs and bumps; this is perhaps the nicest copy Quercus has seen. New York: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1851. Abbe John Mac-Geoghan (1702-1763) served as a chaplain to the Irish Brigades, who served the French army for some 100 years. 3 Mac-Geoghrgan, Abbe (John) and John Mitchel The History of Ireland, Ancient and Modern, Taken from the Most Authentic Records, and Dedicated to the Irish Brigade. By the Abbe Mac-Geoghegan. With a Continuation from the Treaty of Limerick to the Recent Time By John Mitchel
New York D. & J. Sadlier & Co. 1869 Later Printing. Hardcover Very Good No Jacket
New York: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1869. Irish patriot John Mitchel (1815-1875), after his escape from Tasmania to America, continued the 18th-century history of Ireland by the Abbe James MacGeoghegan. This is a Very Good copy of what Quercus believes is a Later Printing of the First Edition published by Sadlier. (The precedence of the various Sadlier editions is somewhat unclear, particularly since some were undated; but Quercus has seen a copy from a year earlier, and 1868 is the oldest in WorldCat.) Despite its popularity in the 19th Century, good copies are rather scarce. Brown pebbled cloth (possibly originally maroon in color) with gilt lettering on the spine; now faded. Mildly bumped and rubbed at head and foot of spine. Clean text; 629 pages, indexed. This is an ex-libris copy, but the treatments are minimal: numbering on the foot of the spine and pencil numbering on the reverse of the Title Page. No pockets or stampings. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Later Printing.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

New York, Boston, Montreal D. & J. Sadlier & Co. 1868 First Thus. Hardcover Very Good Minus No Jacket
New York, Boston, Montreal: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1868. Irish patriot John Mitchel (1815-1875), after his escape from Tasmania to America, continued the 18th-century history of Ireland by the Abbe James MacGeoghegan. This copy is complete in one volume, an interesting variant by the publisher, and much less common than the illustrated 2-volume editions Sadlier published. The precedence of the various Sadlier editions is somewhat unclear, particularly since some were undated.
