7 Stowe, Harriet Beecher Uncle Tom's Cabin; Or, Life Among the Lowly (Volume One only)
Boston & Cleveland John P. Jewett & Company 1852 First Edition. Hardcover Very Good No Jacket
Boston & Cleveland: John P. Jewett & Company, 1852. The first novel by Stowe ( 1811-1896), and her most famous. Its characters have entered the American consciousness and are iconic; whatever the literary merits, one cannot deny this book's contribution to the anti-slavery movement. This is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition (the "Ninety-Fifth Thousand" - some 300,000 were published during the first year of publication). Please note that this is VOLUME ONE ONLY of the two-volume set. Original dark brown cloth binding, decoratively blindstamped. The front cover is stamped with the same cabin scene appearing on the Title Page, and is filled with gilt, as is the lettering on the spine . Clean text; viii, 312 pages. This copy has the correct copyright and printing statements (with Rand & Co added below). The text is very bright and readable, but typically a bit stiff to turn. One signature stands a bit proud and has significant edge-browning (nowhere near the text) The corners are bumped and there is a moderate amount of wear, with several small chips on the spine (there is evidence of a possible old repair to the spine). There is a previous-owner signature and a small bookseller's chop on the second free endpaper; the FFEP has been removed. Still, a better than average copy of this classic tale of The American Dilemma. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. First Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. First Edition.
