London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1933. Known by his pseudonym "AE," George William Russell (1867-1935) was both an Irish nationalist and a pacifist, an infrequent Irish combination. "The Avatars" is a later and rather uncommon work of his, a sort of mystical socialist fantasy set in a future Ireland. It is dedicated to W.B. Yeats, with whom he shared a fascination with spirituality. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Dark blue cloth binding, ruled on the front cover, with gilt titling on the cover and spine. These two tales were originally published in the 1820s, and mostly written by brother John. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus, "A New Edition, with Introduction and Notes, by Michael Banim. Green cloth binding with blindstamping on the front cover (a shamrock, natch!) and gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text with occasional foxing; 343 pages, bright and supple. The binding has darkened and the corners are bumped, but still strongly bound. This is an ex-libris copy, but any library markings are absent; only a paper label on the front paste-down.
