New York & London: Harper & Bros, 1929. The Anglo-French writer, politician, and outdoorsman Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) was a popular and prolific author; his reputation suffers as a consequence of his anti-Semitism. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition, which is SIGNED by the author on the half-title. Considering Belloc's prodigious output, this title is surprisingly scarce. Tan and olive patterned paper-boards with a green cloth spine (now faded to a uniform gray); gilt lettering remains strong. Clean text; 188 pages. Tipped-in illustrations by Joe Pye. Corners are bumped. A solid copy; in an archival plastic protector.. Signed by Author. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Joe Pye. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. First Edition.

Philadelphia & London: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1931. The Anglo-French writer, politician, and outdoorsman Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) was a popular and prolific author; but his reputation has suffered as a consequence of his anti-Semitism. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition (the Third Printing), one of several biographies (Cromwell, Napoleon, James II, Wolsey, et. al.) he wrote from a Roman Catholic perspective. Rather spectacular purple cloth binding, ruled in black, with gilt titling and a gilt bishop's mitre on the front cover. Clean text; 333 pages, indexed. Previous-owner signature (1932) on FFEP. Sun fading to the topstain and around the margins; very occasional spotting. The dustjacket, with a portrait of Cranmer, is unclipped. Overall, it is somewhat darkened, more so on the spine. Chipping to the head and foot of the spine. In an archival plastic protector. Third Printing. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Dust jacket present.
