Hartford, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Chicago: W.S. Williams & Co.; Jones Bros. & Co.; J.A. Stoddard & Co., 1865. While many disguised women served during the American Civil War, this is one of the few well-documented stories. A Canadian, Emma Edmonds eventually became the only woman member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Her memoir was originally published in 1864; this is a Good only copy of the reprint, issued under a different title by a different publisher, which became a best-seller of the time. Green cloth binding, decoratively stamped, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 384 pages. There are nine "embellishments," including a frontis portrait of the author. This copy is in rather delicate condition, with bumping, fraying, and with both gutters cracked. Please note the condition issues. Quercus offers this as a Binding Copy, in need of some repair or restoration. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Reprint.. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket.
