New York & London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1921. Hecht's first novel, written prior to being the most famous screenwriter in Hollywood. It was reissued in 1962 with a surprisingly negative introduction by Nelson Algren, leading to a rather nasty literary spat. No one doubts the power of Hecht's language; judge for yourself! This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Grayish-green cloth binding, with orange titling on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 409 pages, with four pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Mildly bumped, with some light rub to the head and foot of the spine, which is very slightly faded. Cracking to the front paste-down, but holding quite well. A solid copy, lacking the dustjacket. In anarchival plastic protector.. First Edition. Hard Cover. New York: Julian Messner, 1959. Hecht is best known for his plays; this novel has a murder plot but is really deals with "modern" erotic fantasy. This is a Near Fine copy of the Second Printing. Off-white binding with black lettering and a facsimile signature. The evocative Dust Jacket was designed by Rupert Finegold; due to its black background color it shows its edgewear, with a couple of small chips, but remains quite presentable.
