Dublin & London: James Duffy & Sons, 1846. Michael Joseph Barry ( 1817-1889) was a poet and a Young Irelander who later in life recanted the opinions of his youth. This is a Very Good copy of what Quercus belives to be the First Edition. Green cloth binding, blindstamped with an Irish harp on the front cover; filled with gilt. There is no publication date, but there is a Preface to the Second Edition dated 1846. Dark green cloth binding, blindstamped. Design of an Irish harp within a wreath on the front cover. The text is clean, with the exception of some tic-marks to the list of titles; 252 pages. The previous owner has signed it on both the front and rear endpapers; the rear endpaper contains a pencil sketch of two heads and a woman whose garb suggests the Victorian era. A cute little volume, and scarce in the Trade. Size: 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall. Second Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket.

New York: Cameron Associates, 1957. Alvah Bessie (1904-1985) fought with the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, on which he based this, his first novel. He was, famously, one of the blacklisted Hollywood Ten, whose careers were ruined in McCarthy's witch-hunt. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Red cloth binding with black lettering on the spine. Clean text; 383 pages, heavily tanned (although the binding was attractive, a poor quality paper stock was used). Shelf-rubbed at the bottoms of the boards. The dustjacket is complete, but has been price-clipped. Rubbed and creased along the edges. The rear panel features a portrait of Bessie. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Dust jacket present. First Edition.

(Contains an interesting Note from the author, explaining how he was unable to do the final edit before publication, due to leaving on a second Polar expedition.) Exceptionally bright and supple textblock, unfoxed. Lightly rubbed at the margins, more so at the bottom tips; small puncture at the edge of the spine.
