Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1863. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) who is often considered "the first modern sociologist," also wrote on history, political economy, and children's literature. These are Very Good (Plus) copies of Volumes III and IV (only) of her history of England. An uncommon title today. There is no publication date, but Quercus believes this to be the First American Edition of 1864; later editions added two other authors to the Title Page. Brick red decorative cloth bindings, heavily stamped on both covers; the spines feature decorative filligre bands in black and gilt. Clean texts; x, 575 pages, and xii, 665 pages. The text is bright and supple. The front hinge of Volume IV has started to crack but is holding well. Both have rubs to tips and the head and foot of their spines. Still, quite a solid and attractive Victorian set, if only 50% there! Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. First Edition.
