New York & Philadelphia: D. Appleton & George S. Appleton, 1843. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) is often considered "the first modern sociologist;" with typical Victorian energy she also wrote on history, political economy, and children's literature. This title was first published in England in 1841; the First American Edition was by Appleton in 1842. Here is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the version issued by Appleton as "Tales for the People and Their Children" (on the half-title). A sweet little Victorian book, and not common. Blue-green decorative cloth binding. Heavily blind-stamped on the front cover with a floral design and the title; fancy gilt filligre and title on the spine. Clean text; 177 pages, plus two pages in the rear advertising the various "Tales" in the series. Mild bumping to the corners; typical rubbing to the head and foot of the spine; nonetheless, a Very Good (Plus) copy. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First Thus.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. First Edition.
